SKDC moves to keep rented homes up to scratch

Members of the public can have their say on plans designed to ensure private sector rented accommodation in South Kesteven meets required standards.

The district council launched a six-week public consultation on a draft Private Sector Housing Enforcement policy on August 1.

Changes to national legislation designed to improve regulation of the private rented sector mean the council could impose civil penalties of up to £30,000 on landlords whose properties fail to come up to scratch.

Civil penalties, as an alternative to court action, could apply to offences including licensing, overcrowding, failing to comply with an improvement notice or breaching a banning order.

The level of penalty could vary depending on factors such as harm caused to the tenant, severity of the offence or to act as a deterrent.

There are around 12,700 privately rented homes in South Kesteven.

SKDC cabinet member for housing, Coun Nick Neilson, said: "Most landlords provide well-managed and safe homes but, unfortunately, some do not.

"The proposed changes to our policy are designed to ensure the minority who do not meet required standards face appropriate action."

The consultation closes on 14 September.
