The five-way fight for the South Holland and The Deepings parliamentary seat sparked lively debate at a hustings organised by our sister titles the Lincolnshire Free Press and Spalding Guardian.

John Hayes (Conservative), Matthew Mahabadi (Labour), David Parsons (UKIP), George Smid (Liberal Democrat) and Dan Wilshire (Green) shared a platform at the South Holland Centre last night (Thursday) in a Question Time-style debate chaired by reporter Winston Brown.

Editor Jeremy Ransome explained to the 200-plus audience that local newspapers are politically impartial.

He said: “We try to be as neutral as possible – we try to give everybody a platform.”

Check back next week for a full report of the event.

Tonight (Friday) the candidates vying for the Stamford and Grantham seat will be grilled at an event at Bourne Grammar School at 7pm, chaired by Mercury editor Mark Edwards. The event is open to all.

There will also be another for the Stamford and Grantham candidates on Friday, May 1 at Trinity Methodist Church in Stamford, at 7pm for 7.30pm start, hosted by the Rev Canon Donald Gray.
