The Conservative Group of South Kesteven District Council last night voted in a new group leader.

Coun Matthew Lee, who represents St Mary’s ward in Stamford, takes over from Coun Bob Adams. As a result, Coun Lee will also take on the post of Leader of the district council at its annual meeting on April 20.

Coun Kelham Cooke, who represents the Casewick ward, was elected as Deputy Leader at yesterday’s annual meeting of the Conservative group.

At the Group AGM, all 45 members of the ruling Conservative Group had the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.

Coun Lee, 37, was elected to the district council in May 2015. Away from the council he works for the railway based at London King’s Cross. His most recent position on the authority was Vice-Chairman of the Resources Policy Development Group.

Coun Lee said: “I am delighted to have been elected as Group Leader and to have the support of my colleagues to deliver our priorities over the coming years. In the next few months, I will oversee some much needed changes to the way in which the council works to better support the needs of our residents and local businesses.

“Our area has so much potential and we will grasp every opportunity to drive the district forward. I look forward to the challenges ahead, and I will give more details about our plans over the coming months.

On behalf of the Group I would like to offer my thanks to Coun Bob Adams for his work over the last two years as Council Leader.”

Coun Kelham Cooke, 26, was first elected in May 2011 and re-elected in 2015. He was appointed to the Council’s Cabinet in May 2015, with responsibility for Corporate Services.

Coun Cooke said: “I am thrilled to have been elected as Deputy Leader and look forward to working alongside Councillor Lee and my fellow Conservative colleagues in ensuring we work for the benefit of all residents within South Kesteven.”

Coun Adams, who represents the Isaac Newton ward in Grantham, said today: “Under the Constitution of the Council I remain Leader of the Authority until the AGM of the Council in April”.
