A CARE home company has announced that it will be making 3,000 redundancies.

Southern Cross, which runs Priory Court in Priory Road, Stamford, stated on Wednesday that it would be axing jobs but has not yet specified where.

Last week the company said it was holding talks with landlords to defer an aggregate of 30 per cent of its monthly rent payments to September.

Home managers, deputy managers and relief managers, activity co-ordinators and administrators will not be affected by the plans, which are due to be completed by October.

Chief executive Jamie Buchan said: “We are engaging with colleagues to put in place the best possible staffing model for our future needs, and one which fully embraces the best practice available to us.

“In developing this model during a very challenging time for both our company and the industry we are determined that the process we undertake should be exemplary in terms of staff communication.”

Unison’s regional organiser for health, Peter Savage expressed concerns, saying: “These homes tend to be run on a fairly bare minimum of staff. Any reduction of staffing levels has got to have potential consequences for people living in the homes.

“We are looking to get firm details as soon as possible and will be making representations.”
