Councillors have approved plans to refurbish Uppingham town hall, but have rejected an extension to the front of the building.

Members of Rutland County Council’s development control and licensing committee supported their officers’ recommendations at a meeting on Tuesday.

They voted for a split decision on Uppingham Town Council’s plans for the town hall. A county council spokesman said: “The committee approved plans to refurbish the hall’s original church rooms, partially demolish the rear hall and construct a new two storey extension at the rear of the building – dependent upon conditions.

“However, the committee rejected proposals for a single storey extension at the front of the hall because its location, size and design would be detrimental to the building’s character and appearance, along with that of the Uppingham Conservation Area.”

The town council will now consider its options for the building.
