The Acorn Childcare Centre in Stamford held sponsored listening event with Usborne Books at Home

A nursery has raised funds through a sponsored 'Ready, Steady, Listen' event.

In an event organised Usborne Books at Home, children at The Acorn Childcare Centre in Stamford listened to as many books as possible with their families and were sponsored by their friends and relations.

It took place to promote an early love of books and reading for pleasure, and the money raised has allowed the nursery to buy new books, giving a significant boost to their reading material.

Childcare centre manager, Lorna Hodgett, said: “Language is embedded within all of our lives and is developed through reading and listening within early years.

"At Acorn, we use listening, storytelling and singing, amongst many other activities, to enhance these essential life-long skills."

The children raised £510.46 and Sarah Freeman, a local Usborne Organiser from The Little Book Snug, was able to add an additional £153.13 in free books.

Two children at the nursery, Iris and Jasmine, won a book each for listening the most in the two-week challenge.

Sarah said: “Working with local schools and nurseries to help raise money to get brand new books is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.

"Lorna, the children and staff at Acorn Childcare Centre did an incredible job and I’m so pleased to have been able to support them in expanding their book collection."
