Sports editor completes Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle for Carly Fighting Back
Rutland and Stamford Mercury, Rutland Times and The Local sports editor John Evely has completed his 930 mile challenge to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in nine days.
John, 26, rode with a combination of six different riders during the time - all members of his fiancée Becca Flanagan’s family, but just four of the group completed the full distance.
The group left Land’s End on Saturday last week just after 8am and rolled into John O’Groats at about 6.45pm on Sunday. But they weren’t done there and had to cycle another 20 miles to Thurso that night to be able to catch an early train home!
The group finally rolled in at just after 11.30pm in the pitch black.
A tired but delighted John said: “It was a challenge unlike anything I have down before.
“The ride was incredible. It had everything, it tested us physically and mentally day after day.
“The Scottish weather threw everything it has at us but there was no breaking out spirits. Despite the most stunning scenery and feeling of achievement completing stages and climbing over huge hills the overriding memory from the trip will be the sound of laughter - because we met adversity with comedy most the time.”
John took on the challenge to test himself with a once in a lifetime experience and raise money for charity. Carly Fighting Back raises money to support his friend Carly Taylor who broke her neck in three places in 2011, leaving her paralysed from the neck down.
Carly is on the long road to recovery but she requires regular care and therapy.
John only set a modest fundraising target of £200 but has been blown away by the generosity of people and has now passed the £500 mark.
