Have you ever sat around late at night saying you should do some crazy challenge? Most times it comes to nothing but sometimes it does.
John Evely, who is sports editor at the Mercury, The Local and the Rutland Times, loves a challenge. Last year it was why not run a marathon? He took on the Edinburgh Marathon, albeit slowly.
This year, it was why not cycle the length of the country? So today he has swapped his computer keyboard for a bicycle and setting out from Land’s End in Cornwall to cycle the first of nine legs of about 100 miles each which will see him reach John O’Groats on June 7.
John, 26, said: “The reason I am doing this cycle ride is Mercury readers. During the three years I have worked at the paper I have heard, written and read countless amazing stories of people taking on crazy challenges in aid of charity.
“I thought it’s about time I joined them and so for the last four months I have been zipping - well maybe not zipping - plodding, around the Rutland countryside to get ready for the adventure.”
John will be taking on the ride with five members of his fiancée Becca’s family.
John will also be raising money for charity on his ride.
He explains: “Some teams are so special the players in them are your team mates for life. My friend Nelly Webber falls into that category. I played rugby with him from the age of 11 through to seniors, so when I realised there was a way I could help him and his future wife Carly Taylor while fulfilling a life time ambition of mine it just made sense.”
On November, 5, 2011, Carly had a tragic accident which resulted in her breaking her neck in three places, leaving her paralysed from the neck down. Carly is on the long road to recovery but she requires regular care and physical therapy which costs money.
