Oakham nursery receives 'good' Ofsted rating

An Oakham nursery has been praised by school inspectors.

Ofsted has given the Ark Association an across-the-board ‘good’ rating following a visit last month.

The nursery, which cares for 40 children aged one to four, has 12 staff and is based at Oakham Primary School in Burley Road, Oakham.

Ofsted gave the good rating for its leadership and management, the quality of its teaching, personal development and for the outcomes for children.

Provision was rated good as the management and staff reflect on the quality of provision. They gather feedback from parents and value their comments, making changes in activities to make them more interesting to children.

Staff provide small-group activities that help children develop their speaking skills, with them making good progress in communication and language development.

The well-qualified management team support staff well. Staff attend supervision meetings to reflect on their practice. the training they receive has a positive impact on their understanding of how to challenge older children when they take them for visits.

Ofsted also said staff use observations effectively to identify children’s abilities and to plan for what they need to do next.

Staff promote children’s literary skills well and they ask children many questions, which encourages them to take part in conversation.

Staff also provide opportunities to learn about a healthy lifestyle. They talk about healthy food, the importance of exercise and using tools safely.

The report also said the children behave well and all children, including those receiving funding, make good progress from their starting points in learning.

Young children also develop good mathematical skills and they develop skills in readiness for their move to school. This includes good self-help skills such as dressing and undressing. Children are also independent.

Safeguarding’ was also praised, including staff knowing how to detect abuse.

Nursery deputy manager Mica-Claire Foort said: “We are very happy that we have maintained our ‘good’ standards and I would like to thank the team for all their hard work in achieving our good standard. The Ark would also like to thank all parents for their support. The staff team enjoyed a celebratory meal out and nursery had a party to celebrate too!”
