Stamford Police issue warning after theft of number plates in town

Stamford Police have issued a warning to vehicle owners to be extra vigilant following the theft of number plates in the town.

Inspector Ian Martin said that in one recent case a rear number plate stolen from a vehicle in Primrose Way was found within four hours of the matter being reported on another vehicle in Doncaster.

"It is likely that a person was travelling north to commit a crime and stopped in Stamford to steal a number plate," he said.

"It is quite common for criminals to use stolen plates when committing crimes to try and cover their tracks."

He said in another recent case, both the rear and front plates were stolen from a vehicle and these were yet to be found.

"We'd urge members of the public to be on the lookout and if they spot anyone suspicious around their vehicles to please contact us so we can check it out as it could be part of something bigger," he said.

Backing plates are available to purchase from various outlets which make it harder to remove the number plates.

"It makes it difficult to get the number plate off without it breaking," said Inspector Martin.

"It is a preventative tool."
