Startup contest finalists ready to face ‘dragons’ at New College Stamford
Three young entrepreneurs will face a Dragons’ Den-style grilling as they compete for a chance to win start-up funding for their business.
The final of the Start Up! Stamford competition will take place at New College Stamford on Thursday evening.
Young people from across the area submitted their business ideas in September, and a team of business leaders eventually managed to pick three finalists. On Thursday they will present their final ideas to a panel of judges and a winner will be picked.
The prize for the best business idea is initial funding of up to £5,000, provided by sponsorship from businesses in the area.
The winner will also get free mentoring and support from both self-employed business people that have created successful businesses and specialists in law, accountancy, IT, HR and marketing. And there will be the opportunity to make local contacts and join networking organisations.
The finalists are Cameron Jarvis, who came up with a comprehensive computer repair and supply firm; Mitchell Jones, who has set up an online remote control vehicle business; and Joe Hambleton, who came up with a fashion brand.
Cameron, 23, from Stamford, said: “I’m very excited and getting a tiny bit nervous. It’s getting very close.
“The others did seem like they had a really good chance of being a low-cost startup.”
The competition was the idea of marketing expert and business coach Martin Fox.
