Street markets could just be a click away
A new online app to boost the fortunes of South Kesteven’s markets and market traders is being developed with the help of South Kesteven District Council.
Grantham man Leon Mitchell Smith has designed his new Street Markets proto-type application for smart phones and tablets to link market traders and customers across the district.
It has the potential to deliver a better 24/7 connection between buyer and seller to drive sales, create a bespoke channel for promotion and advertising and thereby increase market footfall.
Leon, who has benefitted from SKDC’s Business Support Programme with business and marketing advice and contacts with market traders, has previously designed apps for household names including the NHS, Bet 365, The Nottingham Building Society and Vodafone.
Customers will be able to view inventories of any market within a 25-mile radius with live updates of traders’ stock.
Traders will be able to take pictures of their inventory to upload and advertise with customers are informed as to the price, location and quantity of any item as well as the timings of the market it is sold at and are able to view the ‘liked’ items of any friends that use the application.
Integrated QR scanning means that customers can reserve an item for a selected period of time, present the code to the trader who can confirm the transaction by scanning the QR code with their smart device.
The app would initially be free but would eventually incur a monthly or yearly fee. It has potential for traders to run Group on vouchers and their own local offers.
Leon is now researching demand from both traders and market visitors and deciding how best to take his product forward.
He said: “The market should be the central hub of many market towns, encouraging local entrepreneurs, traders and cultures to come together. The problem is that market traders are working at a disadvantage as lots of todays commerce is online.
“Street Market wants to readdress the balance so that market traders can compliment, compete with and even surpass this current trend. Potential shoppers can view and search the items at anytime during the week enabling them to store their desired items and make time to visit on market day, driving footfall into the market and improving a town’s prosperity.
“We plan to develop new uses with Street Market, such as identifying purchase trends in other towns and cities and even allowing market traders to buy those items wholesale so they can be totally up to the minute with what people want to buy.”
The Google Android version of the Street Market App can be accessed via the website. The Apple iOS App is coming soon.
