Superstar chef's Oakham restaurant shuts shock
A leading Oakham restaurant run by top chef to the stars Sam Letteri has suddenly shut just a year after it was opened.
Fish Tank Sushi in Bakers Yard, Church Street, closed its doors on Monday in a shock move.
Sam tweeted: "Like the Summer sun, The Clash and One Hour free parking, all good things must come to an end.
"After an amazing year, full of soy sauce, sweat, tears and laughter, Sam is folding away his sushi mat (for now) and has closed the Fish Tank doors today to focus on the next exciting chapter."
The businessman, who's been a chef to superstars such as Elton John, Take That, Rihanna and Depeche Mode, thanked his army of loyal customers and vowed to launch another exciting venture before too long.
"Fish Tank will forever remain full of exceptional memories thanks to the local support and team work," said Sam.
"On behalf of the entire Fish Tank team, I would like to thank every treasured customer for their continued support, feedback and reviews (even the 1* TripAdvsior because their sushi was served cold..) we could not have done it without you!
"I look forward to the next appetising project and keeping you updated with another mouthwatering venture.. stay tuned!"
Sam opened Fish Tank Sushi with his wife Romy last September.
The high-profile couple quickly became popular in Oakham and throughout Rutland as they offered vegetarian, fish and meat options on its menu as well as a range of smoothies.
The couple have worked in the tour catering industry for the last 11 years with Sam acting as a personal chef and Romy as a dressing room coordinator but left their old life behind to open up the restaurant.
Sam and Romy told the Stamford Mercury when they opened that there was a lack of vegetarian friendly caterers in Oakham and wanted to spend more time with their two young daughters.
Romy said at the time: “People do not always want to go for a burger because they do not want to feel heavy the next day.
"We are providing another alternative.
“It [sushi] is just becoming increasingly popular.
"We have two young children, Sam was sometimes going away for two months at a time and we just thought this was a good idea.
“The whole point of us doing this is to be a family unit again.
“We have had a really successful opening weekend just thanks to the public."
Take That singer Gary Barlow popped in to eat at the restaurant last April before he performed at a gig at Leicester's De Montfort Hall.
Sam spent five years living and working in Asia and helped set up Ibiza Rocks, an entertainment firm based in Ibiza.
He is a specialist in sushi and juice drinks, and has been employed as personal chef to Take That, Olly Murs, Bastille and Elton John.
As a dressing room assistant, Romy did vegan baking and prepared smoothies for stars such as Olly Murs.
