A record 180 referrals have been made to the Rutland Community Agents in just three months taking the total to more than 740 people who have been supported since its launch last year.

Run by Spires Homes, a member of Longhurst Group, and funded by Rutland County Council, the service aims to provide guidance and assistance to maintain and safeguard the well-being, health and independence of the people within Rutland in partnership with key voluntary and statutory agencies.

The service which is free of charge and was launched in March last year, has supported people with mental and physical health needs and has helped nearly 100 individuals either leave hospital or provide support to prevent a hospital admission.

Mental health workshops have also been set up each month in partnership with Rethink and Rutland County Council to raise awareness of mental health conditions and the support available.

Team manager of the Rutland Community Agents Andy Maguire said: “We’re really pleased to have helped so many people since we launched and the numbers are more than we ever projected, which shows how important this service is.

“We have worked closely with Citizens Advice Rutland, Home Straight and Age UK too, as an integrated service model to collaboratively support people. Plus, we are also working closely with over 80 local organisations to make sure the people who come to us receive effective support to meet their needs.”

As a result of the demand, more volunteers are being sought to help the Community Agents.

The team is looking for people who have experience in caring for someone with dementia, mental health issues or who just have a passion for singing or sewing and organising things.

Volunteers will need to be available for an hour or two once a month, enthusiastic and dedicated. Fresh ideas for new events or groups are welcomed and people from remote villages are especially sought after. DBS checks and reasonable expenses will be paid for.

To get in touch with the team, they be contacted on 01572 756851 or e-mail info@rutlandcommunityagents.org.uk. For more information about the Rutland Community Agents, visit the website at www.rutlandcommunityagents.org.uk.
