For those battling cancer losing their hair is not a choice and it was this that inspired one woman to shave her beloved locks voluntarily.
Tamsyn Alexander, 41, bravely watched as her long locks were shorn at Calitri’s Hair Design in Market Deeping last week.
Tamsyn’s ‘Brave the Shave’ effort was inspired by the breast cancer battles of her mother and her mother-in-law, who were diagnosed within three months of each other, and a friend.
Tamsyn said: “My mother-in-law who’s such a glamorous lady was devastated when she lost her hair and it’s quite a shocking thing to have your hair shaved off. The way I look at it is their breasts won’t grow back but my hair will.”
Tamsyn joked that she was quite vain and said many people thought she might not go ahead with the shave but she was spurred on by a big crowd of supporters, many of whom are customers at Lilli’s Tearoom in Market Deeping where Tamsyn works.
Since the shave, she has had a lot of positive comments.
Tamsyn said: “A lot of people have said it suits me but I don’t know about that!”
She has also been supported by staff at Lilli’s Tearoom, who allowed her to put a fundraising bucket on the till adding to the money raised.
So far she has raised more than £800 for Breast Cancer Now.
She said: “I’m really pleased with how much I’ve raised. It’s fantastic.”
