The Christmas tree is up and decorated in Stamford ready for the lights switch-on tonight, starting a series of events across the area.

Stamford Town Council is hosting the evening.

Rutland Radio will be leading events between 4pm and 4.30pm, Stamford Endowed Schools will provide entertainment between 4.30pm and 5pm, Wildcats will perform between 5pm and 5.45pm.

Santa and mayor Bob Sandall will then arrive on a sleigh before primary school choirs sing between 6pm and 6.30pm.

The countdown to the big switch-on will be at 6.30pm and will be followed by a fireworks display.

The town council is also hosting Stamford Christmas Festival on Sunday, December 9, between 10am and 4pm, when there will more than 200 stalls, as well as entertainment, a Santa’s grotto and competitions including a mince pie eating competition in the town centre.

Some traders in Stamford will be opening late on Thursdays throughout December.

In Bourne the traders, town council, schools and churches are coming together tomorrow to hold a joint Christmas event.

The event will be held in the closed-off North Street and Abbey Road from midday, running to about 7.30pm, although the funfair will run later.

Traders will also be opening late.

The Christmas lights will be switched-on by mayor Helen Powell in front of the town hall at about 4.30pm.

Children’s choirs from Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, Bourne Academy and Bourne Abbey Primary Academy will perform a selection of Christmas carols from about 4pm on a stage in front of The Angel Hotel.

Much like during the BRM Day celebrations in October, groups will run their own events to coincide with the main celebration. Bourne Methodist Church in Abbey Road will be holding its eighth Christmas Tree Festival.

This year there will be 44 trees on display. The doors will be open tomorrow from 10am to 6.30pm and from midday to 4pm on Sunday, finishing with a Christmas Songs of Praise.

Tomorrow, a Christmas fair will take place at the Abbey Church Hall, from 10am to 1pm with various stalls and refreshments. A fete will also be taking place at Digby Court Care Home in Christopher’s Lane from 2.30pm until 4.30pm with a visit from Santa Claus and stalls selling jewellery, crafts, jigsaws and
