A man has died after the car he was travelling in crashed into a tree.

Zach Whittall, 21, of Great Oxendon, Northamptonshire, was a passenger in a black Vauxhall Corsa which it came off the road and crashed into a tree in Clipsham Road, Stretton, at about 11pm yesterday (Tuesday).

A light grey Vauxhall Astra estate was travelling in the same direction at the same time.

Emergency services were called but Mr Whittall was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Corsa was taken to Peterborough City Hospital with serious injuries. He remains there in a stable condition.

Mr Whittall worked at the nearby Olive Branch restaurant in Clipsham.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra was not injured. A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision and remains in police custody.

Det Con 1761 Pete Davies is investigating the incident. He said: “Both vehicles were travelling along Clipsham Road towards Stretton when the Corsa left the road and collided with a tree. We would like to speak to anyone who was travelling along this road yesterday evening to contact us if they saw either vehicle beforehand or witnessed the actual collision.”

Witnesses to the crash should call 101 quoting incident 689 of August 19.
