A covert police operation was recently held on the A1 in Rutland with 103 drivers being stopped for not wearing seatbelts over six days.
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership organised the operation in which an unmarked HGV unit driven by police officers, patrolled both the A1 in Rutland and the Leicestershire section of the M1, on the lookout for drivers committing Fatal Four offences. These are driving without seatbelt, driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, using a mobile phone at the wheel and speeding.
There were 103 drivers were stopped for not wearing seatbelts, along with two for using a mobile phone. A number of those stopped were driving foreign registered vehicles.
Disposable cups were also distributed to truck stops and roadside cafes, carrying road safety messages.
