For most people, tackling at least one mountain climbing challenge is enough to tick it off the bucket list – but not for an intrepid trio of pals from Stamford.

Fundraisers Steve Marsh, Ian Scott and John Willoughby – members of the Stamford XT, an association of former Round Tablers - already have the National Three Peaks Challenge under their belt, having completed the demanding climb in 2014.

But, the friends – who have an average age of 60 – are now setting their sights a little higher, having decided to take on the famous Mount Kilimanjaro this October, during an intense seven-day trek.

Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, with a 5,895-metre summit.

Steve, Ian and John are funding the cost of the trip themselves, but are using the challenge to raise funds to support the work of the NSPCC around Peterborough.

Businessman Ian, who is involved with a number of local charities, said: “The most testing part of the challenge will be coping with altitude sickness and staying free of bugs and stomach upsets whilst over there.

“Training wise we all are working to our own regimes via general exercise plus use of the gym to work on cardio vascular or greater lung capacity to help overcome the altitude effects.

“We also play tennis most weeks to keep friendly rivalry over our fitness levels!

“Many former climbers talk about the bitter cold temperatures on the summit in addition to altitude but for me the greatest reward will be the stunning scenery on the climb particularly during the final ascent and a determination to complete it, to respect those who will be donating to this incredible charity.”
