‘Unexploded bomb’ turns out to be wartime bullets as trains through Cambridge return to normal
Cambridge station has now been re-opened after it emerged the ‘unexploded bomb’ was in fact a 15cm bullet.
It was evacuated after workmen dug up what they believed to be a bomb, however subsequent examination revealed the object was not as sinister as first though.
A female stall holder from the station, who did not wish to be named said: ‘”We were all evacuated around 9am after the builders apparently found some old bullets in a toilet they were renovating on platform 1.
“They’re doing lots of work on the station at the moment and we all got evacuated a couple of months ago when they found something similar.
“You get worried because there could be all sorts of things like this just lying around the station which could go off at any moment.
“They let us back in after 10am and everything’s gone back to normal now. At least until they find another bomb.”
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to Cambridge station at 08.50 after workmen reported finding a ‘unexploded device’.
“Colleagues from Cambridgeshire Constabulary also attended and an object, which appears to be an old bullet around 15cm (5in) in length was removed.”
There are delays on trains through Cambridge this morning after the station was evacuated due to an ‘unexploded device’ being found near the tracks.
The wartime device was found near the railway lines close to the station and all services were halted while authorities dealt with the device.
The device has now been removed and trains are running again, although delays of up to 30 minutes are expected for the rest of the morning.
A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “We were called to Cambridge station at 8.50am after workmen reported finding an unexploded device.
“Colleagues from Cambridgeshire Constabulary also attended and an object, which appears to be an old bullet around 15cm in length, was removed.
“The station was evacuated while the situation was assessed, but is now re-opening”
Many people took to Twitter after hearing their travel plans had been affected.
Dave Clark tweeted: “Turns out there’s an unexploded bomb at Cambridge station. Getting comfy for a long wait on the train.”
Ruth @Doof64 said: “What’s happening at Cambridge station? We are being held at Foxton. Going to be late for a meeting.”
