An RAF bomb disposal unit was called to a Peterborough home this weekend after a gardener dug up an unexploded grenade.

Police and members of 5131 BD Squadron from RAF Wittering were called to Donegal Close, Gunthorpe, at about 7.30pm on Saturday after resident Graham Palmer found the grenade while digging in his garden.

The grenade was X-rayed and taken away to be destroyed in a controlled explosion.

An RAF Wittering spokesman said: “We can confirm that we were called out to Donegal Close in Peterborough after a member of the public found an old hand grenade.

“It was deemed safe to touch it and safe to move it so it was removed from the scene and a controlled demolition was carried out.

“Calling us out was the right thing to do. If a member of the public ever finds something of this nature we would urge them not to attempt to touch it or move it. They must call the police straight away.”
