A bridge over the River Nene just outside the village of Fotheringhay is to be closed with immediate effect because it is unsafe.

Signage is being put in place to show a diversion route which will take vehicles who would normally access Fotheringhay from a southerly direction, via the villages of Tansor and Cotterstock.

The bridge was damaged recently after being hit by a vehicle but remained open with safety barriers in place.

However, the recent wet and windy weather has meant that the bridge has been weakened to an extent that there are concerns about safety.
