Updated: Suspected Stamford shoplifter appears at court

A suspected shoplifter arrested in Stamford has been charged and appeared at court.

The suspect was charged with three offences and appeared at Lincoln magistrates' court, said Inspector Ian Martin, of Stamford Police.

He is accused of stealing alcohol worth a total of £1470.50 from Waitrose in Stamford town centre on September 5 as well as last Wednesday and Thursday.

The suspect was seized along with another man when police swooped on a blue Nissan Qashqai at the top of busy Cherry Holt Road last Thursday afternoon.

Insp Martin, of Stamford Police, said the men were stopped after their SUV vehicle was detected by police Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and council CCTV.

"Both suspects have also got convictions for similar offences."

One of the suspects is in his 50s and the other is in his 30s.

They are both from Corby, Northamptonshire, said Insp Martin.

The second man has been released on police bail as police inquiries continue.

"We were very pleased with our swift response," he said.

"This operation shows that we are vigilant and on our guard.

"This should serve as a real deterrent to criminals coming to Stamford.

"We are on our toes and will use all available means to stop people committing crime."
