UPDATED: Five people hospitalised after police discover lorry full of immigrants on A1 at Stamford
A lorry full of suspected illegal immigrants has been stopped on the A1 northbound near Stamford.
Five of those detained have been taken to Peterborough City Hospital believed to be suffering dehydration – none are believed to be seriously ill.
Cambridgeshire Police received information about 30 possible immigrants in the back of a French lorry, travelling north on the M11 this morning.
Officers stopped the lorry on the A1 northbound near to the junction with the B1081. About 27 people have been detained by police.
The driver of the lorry, a 54-year-old man from Dover, has been arrested on suspicion of assisting unlawful entry to the UK.
Police are currently establishing the nationality and age of all those detained and liaising with the Immigration Enforcement Service.
This process is likely to take some time due to the number of people and nationalities involved.
