Updated: the deaths of two inmates at Stocken Prison are a mystery

The deaths of two inmates at a Rutland jail on the same day are a mystery, a watchdog chief has said.

Paul Mills, chairman of the Independent Monitoring Board for Stocken Prison, near Stretton, said it was “highly unusual” after David Saxton, 56, and Patrick Kettle, 39, were found dead in their cells in separate wings by shocked officers just after 6am on October 6.

Mr Mills, 69, said: “It is highly unusual that two prisoners died on the same day.
