A VETERAN has been presented with a medal for his service during the Malayan Emergency.
Peter Odell, 72, of Derwent Drive, Oakham, helped to protect trains packed with ammunition from terrorists as it rumbled through Malaysia.
He was an RAF survival equipment fitter serving in Singapore when he was called upon to help quell riots, during the conflict in the 1950s.
Last week Mr Odell was presented with a medal from the Malayan government as thanks for serving in the crisis.
Mr Odell, who is married to Marjorie, 68, received his medal during a presentation in Spalding.
He said: “The presentation was good and to get something like that shows the appreciation of the Malayan government. It does mean a lot to us after what we went through out there.”
