A husband and wife-owned wine merchants in Oakham, Rutland, which specialises in importing wine from Italy, has been recognised by Small Business Saturday.

Bat and Bottle, owned by Ben and Emma Robson, has been named among the 100 small businesses in the UK to be celebrated by Small Business Saturday, the campaign that culminates in the UK’s dedicated day for small businesses on December 3.

The couple founded Bat and Bottle in 1994 from their kitchen table, just after getting married, with a plan to sell cricket bats as well as interesting wines. The cricket side has come and gone, but the passion for wine remains.

The couple have spent over 20 years seeking out artisan producers, small-scale wineries, oddities and surprises, to offer customers truly individual wines.

Bat and Bottle, located at Oakham Enterprise Park will now be among the select number of companies to be featured by the Small Business Saturday campaign.

“We buy wine mostly from small family-run estates,” explains Emma. “When a corporate-sized producer has impressed us, there has almost always been a family behind it or a boss with small business mentality and a very personal approach to both production and sales.

“We use shippers that are family owned and run and buy our gins from small UK artisan producers. It makes for a better, stronger working relationships.”
