An eyewitness has described how a man was assaulted in an unprovoked attack by a group of bikers outside a Harley-Davidson garage’s open day.

The man was taken to hospital with head injuries after the attack in Ayston Road, Uppingham, at about 1pm on Saturday.

They left him for dead. It was a horrible thing to see. It was scary. It was all done in front of kids and women in the street.

Leicestershire Police have only released brief details of the incident, confirming that a man sustained injuries to the head and was taken to hospital. He was later discharged following treatment. But eyewitnesses say the man was attacked by a group of motorbike riders who punched and kicked him and “left him for dead”.

Sycamore Harley-Davidson, based nearby, had an open weekend at the time, although there is no suggestion the incident was in any way related. One witness, who asked not to be named, said the man was sitting having a drink with a woman at the open day and got up to leave as the bikers arrived.

The witness said: “They started verbally abusing the woman. The guy stepped in to stop it. There was no fighting from his side, and he was talking to one of the bikers to try to protect the woman.

“One of the others just hit him in the back of the head. Another swept his feet out. When he hit the floor there were about eight of them punching him.

“They left him for dead. It was a horrible thing to see. It was scary. It was all done in front of kids and women in the street.”

The witness, who reported the attack to police, saidit was unusual for the area.

“It’s not something we have seen in Uppingham, not even in Rutland. Unless you were there you can’t describe it. It was by no means a pleasant thing to witness.”

Police were unable to give the full extent of the man’s injuries. But the witness said: “He looked horrific. I’m ex-forces and I’ve been in fights before but pure carnage. It was eight guys attacking one man.

“They were hitting him with rings and what looked like knuckle dusters on. He hadn’t done anything. He didn’t lift his fists.

“His head was oozing blood. Everyone was just frozen. People didn’t want to get involved.

“He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the attack.

The road was closed for several hours while officers carried out inquiries.
