Youth workers’ bid to expand services with a new outreach team

YOUTH workers are hoping to extend their work in the community by setting up a new outreach team.

Teenzone has already built up a popular youth club in Stamford over the last five years which runs social activities for nine to 19-year-olds on three nights a week in the basement of Christ Church in Green Lane.

But now the club wants to expand its work and is looking for new volunteers to develop an outreach team to work with young people on the streets of Stamford.

Youth worker Ali Rigby said: “All our new initiatives come from the feedback we get from young people.

“Over the last few months we have realised that although we are engaging with lots of young people at the youth centre, they don’t all come here so we want to go out to them. We’re looking for volunteers to go out onto the streets to build up a rapport with these young people and find out what it is they want in the town.”

The outreach team will be based around the recreation ground and will work on Thursday evenings from 5pm until 8.30pm alongside the Teenzone catering van.

Ali said: “We’re looking for people who are reliable, enthusiastic and willing to give everyone a chance. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have any experience of working with young people as we can provide training.

“It’s really rewarding to see the difference Teenzone makes to young people and to know you have given them something to do with their time.”

Four volunteers have already signed up to the scheme. Anyone else who is interested in getting involved can contact Ali Rigby on 01780 761930, 07850 450120 or
