Barnack survive ‘Birching’ to win narrowly

Stamford Town father and son combination Chris and Alex Birch took all 10 Barnack wickets between them in a Rutland Division One game yesterday (June 7).

Alex (18) led the way with 7-64 with fellow slow bowler Chris picking up 3-29 as Barnack subsided from 93-0 to 187 all out, but Stamford couldn’t press home their half-time advantage and closed seven runs short on 180-8.

Abdul Shafiq (80) and Mohammed Yaseen (52) were responsible for Barnack’s fast start. Tom Williams cracked 59 in Stamford’s reply.

Barnack are enjoying their best top-flight season for many years as only Uppingham and Nassington are above them in the table. The top two were also voctorious yesterday.

Leaders Uppingham overcame early problems against outgoing champions Peterborough Town to win by 70 runs, while Nassington beat Bourne by 53 runs in a high-scoring contest.

Harry Butchart cracked 77 from number seven to push Uppingham up to 240-9, while veteran Gary Scotcher (61) top-scored in Nassington’s formidable 45-over total of 303-9.

Sam Evison made 71 and Tom Dixon a hard-hitting 50 in Bourne’s reply of 250 all-out.

Petrus Jeftha bashed a ton and Mark Bell and Alex Martin collected half centuries as Oundle thrashed Eaton Socon by 146 runs. Jack Bolsover claimed six wickets at the home side were dismissed for 160.

And there was a first century of the summer for Danny Haynes of Wisbech as they beat nine-man Medbourne by 46 runs.
