Benn Tilley from Bourne competes in the Cadwell Park Wolds Trophy while driving a 1974 March 743 Classic Formula 3

Bourne's Benn Tilley enjoyed his best-ever racing experience when competing in the Cadwell Park Wolds Trophy at the picturesque Lincolnshire circuit.

Tilley took two first places while driving a 1974 March 743 Classic Formula 3 which made for a memorable outing.

He said: "Cadwell Park in my opinion is the best circuit in the country.

"The circuit itself is like a rollercoaster. It has the nickname the ‘Mini Nurburgring’ and is absolutely awesome."

Tilley had to bed in some brake pads during the early stages of qualifying but still managed a time good enough to qualify second which was only a few tenths of a second behind the pole position driver.

He then trailed the pole position driver for three-quarters of the race before making his move to take the opening race victory.

Tilley explained: "The pole position man got the jump on me at the start so I had my work cut out to catch him but I managed that after around three-quarters of the race.

"Having to back out of a couple of attempted overtakes, I managed to get down the inside into the hall bends a couple of laps later.

"It isn't really an overtaking place but I could trust the guy I was racing with. It was tight but I made the move stick. A few people I know said it was a daring move but I knew I had to go for it.

"I was under pressure from him for the rest of the race but managed to hold him off for a very hard-fought win. It was such an awesome race and is the most fun I've ever had."

Tilley's closest challenger didn't compete in the next race due to a mechanical failure and, despite a red flag following a separate accident, the Bourne driver kept his cool to secure another success.

He added: "I pulled a gap in the first part of the race, but then it was red flagged due to an accident.

"Part two of the race was a five minute dash and I managed to get a very good start and get my head down which enabled me to pull a gap and win.

"The car and circuit combination was the best I've ever experienced and is the most fun I've ever had. I'd like to thank everyone who has made it possible."
