Sunny weather saw members of the public turn out in force for the opening of Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool.

Crowds of swimmers headed to the pool, in the Abbey Lawns, at 10.30am on Saturday for the start of the summer season.

Disney characters Ariel, from The Little Mermaid, and Elsa, from Frozen, also made an appearance during the day – much to the delight of the many young children in attendance.

Mandy Delaine-Smith, chairman of the charity which runs the pool, said she hopes the well-supported opening weekend is a positive sign of things to come.

She said: “We had the best opening in years, thanks to the sunny weather, and were delighted to see so many people come along for a swim.

“Ariel and Elsa where very popular visitors and children were really excited to meet them.

“We hope to see lots more sunshine over the summer to make the season a real success.”

The pool is open 12.30pm to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and 10.30am to 6.30pm at weekends.

2015 admission prices remain in place, with adult entry costing £4.50, children £3 and under-threes £1.

Mandy added: “We decided to freeze last year’s prices because we needlots of people through the door to help make enough money to keep the pool open.

“Last year bad weather and high energy prices meant we made a loss and we do not want to the repeat that again this year.”

A small team of volunteers spent weeks cleaning, repairing and painting the pool and surrounding area prior to the opening weekend.

Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool can trace its history back to 1919 when the historic monks fishpond was converted into a swimming pool by keen local swimmers.

It has been operated and maintained by volunteers since 1990.
