Blackstones beat Lions to the cup in the new Stamford derby
PDFL Division One champions Stamford Lions looked to set to cause an upset in the first edition of the SRSN Daniels Cup on Saturday but Blackstones, who play two divisions above, came back to earn a 3-2 victory at the Zeeco Stadium.
The first half was played out 0-0 with Stones looking jaded and Lions certainly up for it but unable to score.
Blackstones had the first chance of the half when a Ben Porter cross wasn’t fully cleared and Scott Ginty had a chance to get a shot away but he could only fire over the crossbar.
Ten minutes in Henry Dunn had a great chance to open the scoring for the Lions but put his shot narrowly wide after being played in by Declan Spayne.
Stamford were on top and if their shooting had been a little more accurate they could have been out of sight. Tom Edwards cut in from the wing before unleashing a shot but once again the effort was off target and when Lions did get their radar working Stones keeper Mark King was on hand to make a point blank save from a header from a corner.
The second half came alight with Lions taking the lead through a superb long range curling shot from Brown which had King well and truly beaten. Stones equalized from the towering header from Carl Parker after a nice free kick into the box from Porter.
Blackstones took the lead with a tenacious goal line scramble two minutes from time with Steve Mastin putting the ball in the net.
But within a minute Lions equalized through Brown, who rose highest to win a header from a free kick into the box. The shot hit the crossbar was judged to have crossed the line.
Less than a week after Blackstones had lost the Lincs Senior Trophy in a shoot out,the game looked to be heading to penalties but late in the day Mastin latched onto a through ball and, beating off the attentions of the defender, lobbed Lions keeper Jimmy Russon to win the cup.
