Bosses wants Blackstones to finish with a flourish
Blackstones joint boss Lee Clarke is urging his charges not to let their season fizzle out.
Stones play host to Lutterworth Athletic on Saturday in Division One of the United Counties League Division One looking to cement their place in the top six.
That would be enough to guarantee a place in next season’s FA Cup competition and Clarke wants his side to finish their final 10 games with a flourish.
He said: “There is no pressure on us to finish in a certain position other than what we put on ourselves.
“We want to finish as high as we can and we don’t want our season to just peter out. Our aim is to win every game we’ve got left.
“We’ve got a talented bunch of lads who we have a lot of belief in and we’ll see where they can take us and obviously the higher up we finish the better.”
Stones go into Saturday’s match having won just one of their last six league games, but Clarke has been encouraged by their progress, especially in the reduction of the goals they’ve conceded.
It took a 90th minute equaliser to deny Stones victory at Melton on Saturday after another disciplined defensive display.
Clarke added: “We defended very well, but it was just a late lapse of concentration that saw caught by a sucker punch.
“We were not at our best, but we are trying to find the right balance between attack and defence.
“Defensively we are a lot better and we stood up quite well on Saturday. It looked like we would grind out a 1-0 win so to let a late goal in was very frustrating.
“We should have been able to see it out, but there were still a lot of positives. We are learning a lot about the players and their mentality and attitude.
“It’s a learning curve, but they are taking on board what we’re telling them and learning quickly.
“We’ve hammered home the defensive aspect which has improved as a team and we’ve now got to back that up with a bit more quality so we don’t lose our attacking threat.”
