A late Jack Berry penalty gave Bourne the bragging rights over Deepings with a 10-5 victory in Midlands Four East (South) at Milking Nook Drove.

Bourne were determined to avenge their 16-10 loss to the Green Machine in October and an early try from skipper Tom Dixon, converted by Berry, set them on their way.

But Deepings levelled midway through the first half with an unconverted try by captain Dom Peacock before Berry’s match-winning penalty ten minutes from full-time.

Dixon said: “There was a lot of hype around the game, given what happened at their place, and we wanted to even the score.

“We knew what we had to do and our defence was a big part of the win.

“I prefer games that are a bit tight and it was nice to get a win against them.”

Peacock said: “I’m disappointed with the result but I think the lads played well considering we were missing a couple of players.

“Bourne wanted it more and we just didn’t capitalise on our opportunities to score points.”

“It was very frustrating, a bit stop-start, and we lacked the clinical side of our game.

“We fell asleep for the first five or ten minutes and there was a miscommunication in our defence which led to their try.”

It was the last game for Deepings full-back Brian Ward who is moving to New Zealand with his fiancee after spending ten years with the club and his team-mates gave him a fitting send-off.
