Bourne’s Alex Hampson has won his first major event, taking first place in the Southern Cross Country Championships in London on Saturday.
Travelling with several other Bourne-based Nene Valley Harriers to Parliament Hill, London, for the race, Hampson competed in a field of 250 U15 boys over a muddy 4.5k loop.
Starting up a large hill was a severe test but at the first bend the Bourne runner was already in the top ten places.
At the top of the second hill, he was in a group of three at the front of the race and with a third of the race remaining he made his move for victory. Despite a slight deviation, he came home a clear winner to claim his first win in a major event.
Well supported by Cameron Marshall in 86th, Damion Rutterford 88th, Austin Herbert 119, and Ollie Bowling 170, the club finished an excellent eighth in the team rankings.
With clubs represented from as far as Cornwall and Norfolk the youngsters performed exceptionally well with Bradley Allan 53rd in the U13 boys and Jasmine Allen 173rd for the U15 girls.
In the U17 girls, Amy Gibbons’ 79th was an impressive effort over 5K late in the day when the course was at its worst.
