Stamford Boxing Club’s Matt Cross produced a career-best performance despite the unenviable task of fighting twice in one day.

Cross was competing in the National Championships and the hectic schedule was set due to the extensive pool of talent within his weight division.

He took on an unbeaten puncher from London’s Joes Boxing Academy in his first bout where Cross showed smooth skills and boxed impeccably in securing a unanimous points victory.

His quarter-final clash was against the highly-touted and undoubted number one ranked Riva Leigh-Jones, a former national junior champion from the East Coast ABC in Lowestoft.

East Coast are a thriving club having already produced four national champions in the junior ranks this season.

But Cross rose to the occasion and produced a performance that belied his relative inexperience.

In what was an enthralling edge of the seat contest, Cross won a close points decision and advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday where he travels to Dagenham.
