CHRIS Jones was only fractionally beaten by the train when six members of Rutland Running and Triathlon club competed in the 29th Race the Train event in Snowdonia on Saturday.
The race is a 14-mile cross country run where runners set off at the same time as the Talyllyn steam railway with the aim of beating it back into the station.
A traditional club run in the past, this was the first time for a few years that anyone from the club had entered the race but following Saturday’s efforts it seems to firmly back on the club’s calendar.
First home for the Rutland club was Chris Jones - fresh from his success at the club triathlon a week ago - coming in just after the train in 2h 12m 34s.
Dave Cawte finished second for the club in 2.20.33, followed by the club’s only female representative, Maria Grundy in 2.25.17. Club president Paul Rogerson ran home in 2.27.58 with Steve Griffiths (who organised the weekend for the club) crossing the line in 2.33.58.
Finishing off the club contingent was Mark Coleman who ran despite suffering from food poisoning to finish just over the three hour mark in 3.03.48.
