Bowls clubs preparing for the start of the new Peterborough and District League season

More news, no ads

Local outdoor bowls clubs will contest a new season of fixtures in the Peterborough and District League from week starting Monday, May 17, observing a minute’s silence ahead of their first match, for colleagues who have died during the pandemic.

It was announced this week by the league committee which reported that two clubs – Bourne Town and city-based Park Crescent – had withdrawn after the 2019 season, contributing to the total of nine teams pulling out.

Now that the team registration deadline has past, with final player registrations set for April 23, the fixtures for the midweek, Over 55 and weekend leagues, will be published at the end of April.

All matches must be completed by September 19 and will be subject to any appropriate Covid-19 restrictions throughout the season.

Fixture secretary Tony Coe said: “We are aiming to encourage as many matches as possible, as safely as possible, with players welfare absolutely paramount.

“Each club will be expected to ensure that facilities and game management adhere to all the governing bodies’ guidance and requirements.”

Until at least June 21, triples games must be played on alternate rinks to meet social distancing standards and therefore clubs will need to review their fixtures when they are received and arrange any changes accordingly when more than one team is scheduled to play a home game.

No handbooks will be printed this season, with clubs provided with team captain contact details.

Results will be emailed and the league website (www.bowls-league.com) will provide the fixtures, results, tables and rules.

n Individual bowling members of Stamford Indoor Bowls Club who entered LIBA competitions for 2020-21 will still have their entries honoured for the coming winter season.

Those who did not enter previously but who wish to still to compete and plan to re-join the club in September, must advise Bob Warters their intended entries before the end of April.

n Contrary to last week’s reported highlights of the draw for the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation county competitions, bowlers should now disregard them.

They have now been re-drawn to accommodate new entries and those who subsequently withdrew from the 2020 fixtures.

The new draws for the 2021 men’s and women’s competitions will be published next week.
