Stamford Colts made it a double at the Notts Lincs and Derby rugby 7s on Sunday. Fielding two teams, a feat only matched by rivals Newark, other teams were entered by Sleaford, Spalding, Long Eaton and Boston. Stamford won the Shield with one team and the runner up trophy in the cup battle with another.

Six matches were played in the pool sections to secure a place in the finals. Try scorers in the pools were, Kieran Hynes (9, including one hat-trick against Spalding), Dean Elmore (6), Kieran Milner (3), Ollie Winspear, George Cox, Alistair Jones scored two tries apiece and Andy Marshal, Chris Haddow and Jack Jones all scoring one each. Both teams’ kicking skills seemed to have deserted them for the day however, and only 8 conversions were achieved.

In the Shield final, the try scorers were Dan Whadcock, Kieran Hynes and Alistair Jones, with only one conversion between them to overcome Sleaford 17-14. The scorers in the cup final were Dean Elmore and Ollie Winspear, losing 10-22 to Newark’s A team.

The squad will not compete again until September but there’s a superb programme of training over the summer months as the U16s from this season join the current U17s to form next seasons U17/18s Colts sides.

New players are always encouraged to come down and get involved.
