Cottesmore Amateurs made to pay for their missed chances
It says a lot about the up turn in Cottesmore Amateurs form and ambition that they were disappointed just to draw 1-1 with Barlestone St Giles on Saturday in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division.
Amateurs started the better of the two sides and very nearly took the lead through Adam Wilford but he could only fire wide from following a goalmouth scramble.
The hosts were on top at Rogues Park and Andre Fontoura and Danny Seals both had decent chances saved by the visiting goalkeeper.
However after Cottesmore’s flying start Barlestone grew into the game and were creating chances of their own. Amateurs keeper Gaz Shaw pulled off a fantastic stop with his foot to deny Craig Leonard the opening score.
However Shaw could do nothing to stop an absolute wonder strike of a goal ten minutes after the break.
John Roberts smashed a curling and dipping effort from all of 35 yards which sailed into the top corner of Shaw’s net.
But Amateurs stuck to their task and they clawed themselves back level through Fontoura, who finished a nice move with a delicate chip.
In the end it was Cottesmore who finished the match stronger and substitute Robbie Preira was a real thorn in the visitor’s side from almost the second he came on. He was close to scoring with a lob within a minute of joining the action and along with John Love had another chance to earn all three points for Amateurs but the Rutland side failed to take their chances.
Amateurs sit in 11th position in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier position on 22 points, the same number of points as Barlestone, who are one place better off thanks to a marginally better goal difference.
Next up for Cottesmore in a trip to Kirby Muxloe Reserves on Saturday, who sit in 13th position.
Cottesmore Amateurs: Gaz Shaw, Sam Wright (Adam Wright) Craig McJanett, Rob Grant, Sean Dennigan, Luke Smith, Adam Wilford, Andre Fontura (Ryan Kitt-Geraghty) Jordan Smith, Danny Seals (Robbie Preira) John Love.
