Cottesmore earn their second league win in emphatic style
Cottesmore Amateurs manager Neil Miller said just last week his team were capable of doing something special if they give it their all and on Saturday he was proved right.
Cottesmore won their first league game since the opening day of the season in the Leicestershire League Premier Division with a 6-2 thumping of Ashby Ivanhoe Reserves.
Alex Mackie scored a hat-trick for the home team and Danny Seals struck a brace. Another goal from John Love, who is finding the back of the net on a regular basis for Cottesmore this season, ensured it was the club’s biggest win for a year since they scored 10 goals against Rothley Imperial.
However things did not start well for Amateurs at Rougues Park and they were behind after just two minutes.
But eight minutes later Cottesmore were level, this time with Love playing provider, delivering a free-kick for Mackie to convert.
However an error at the back saw Amateurs hand Ashby the lead again within minutes of going level.
There were plenty of goals left in an eventful first half. Luke and Jordan Smith combined well to play in Seal who showed great strength to beat two covering defenders and blast a shot between the legs of the visiting goalkeeper.
Love was on the mark before half time to give Cottesmore the lead for the first time and they would not relinquish it for the rest of the game.
Jordan Smith again did the damage down the flank before cutting it back to his striker to blast home.
After the break Cottesmore were well on top. Seals scored his second of the day to give the hosts some breathing space and then Mackie put some polish on the victory with a pair of strikes to get the match ball. Both his goals came from crosses to the back post from Jordan Smith who was instrumental in four of the six goals scores.
Cottesmore had been dealt a blow before the match when they were told their only win of the season before Saturday had been wiped off the books after Dunton and Broughton withdrew from the league.
Since then Cottesmore have drawn six of their nine league games but found victories elusive. All those draws mean Cottesmore sit in 13th position in the 17 team Everards Premier Division despite having only lost three games. The next five teams above them in the standings have all lost more matches, but also won more.
Amateurs manager Neil Miller said: “The league table does not tell the full story of where we are as a team at the moment.
“It’s onwards and upwards for us. We have got some good footballers here now. We are not a team of superstars but we work hard together.
“Sometimes we are a little naive in what we do but we all need things to work on in training, that’s football.”
