WAKERLEY and Barrowden suffered a five wicket defeat in their final game of the season, despite a second century of the season for Jonny White.
Barrowden were put into bat by the University of Leicester and lost Chris White and Sam Hodson early on, before Jonny White and Matt Nicholls helped get the home side back into a good position.
Nicholls was caught at cover, and Bob White and Fraser Wright fell in quick succession while Chris White raced past his half century.
Shaun Cardell made a quick 27 but it was White who did the damage, bringing up his second century of the season as Barrowden got up towards 200. On 112, White edged to slip but he had done enough to give the Rutland League division 7 side hope of defending a total against strong opposition. Barrowden closed on 205-8.
A stunning catch from Hodson, diving to his left at cover, reduced the University side to 0-1, before two more wickets saw the visiting side on 22-3. Glenn Moody and Bob White picked up a wicket apiece but a partnership of 126 - and an unbeaten 115 from Shoaib - ensured the visitors won with 10 balls to spare.
Barrowden captain Chris White said “On the whole, I’m very happy with the season we’ve had. We had some good wins and hopefully we’ll come back next year a year older and with some new faces, even stronger.”
