Cricket: Bourne see off Barnack to take Stamford Charity Cup

South African Matt Hawken was the man-of-the-match as Bourne saw off Barnack by seven wickets in the final of the Stamford Charity Cup at Market Deeping’s Outgang Road base last night.

Hawken only recently joined the Abbey Lawns outfit - he is a friend of Bourne teenager Archie Stroud - but he made an instant impact with his leg-spin bowling, taking 4-13 from his four overs to help restrict Barnack to 143 in their 20 overs.

Apparently Hawken is more renowned back home for his ability with the bat.

Jack Berry then replied with 55 which added to 39 apiece from Pete Morgan and Conrad Louth eased Bourne to victory with almost three overs to spare.

Usman Sadiq had cracked 63 for Barnack. Asim Butt made a quickfire 32 before Hakins got to work.

Defeated skipper Steve Best said: “The lad bowled really well. We had a good start, but we lost in the middle of our innings when we lost too many wickets.”

The Stamford KO Trophy Final between Burghley Park and Stamford Town takes place on Monday, July 15 at Barnack.
