Cricket: Lee is as proud as a Peacock after tense Deeping victory

Lee Peacock struck a cruicial late blow for Market Deeping at Market Rasen.

Market Deeping recorded a nerve-jangling win at Market Rasen in the Lincs Premier Division yesterday (August 1).

Deeping looked set fair for a comfortable win after dismissing their hosts for just 141, but it required a huge hit from number 11 Lee Peacock before they could celebrate a one-wicket win.

Ajaz Akhtar (58) continued his fine batting form since joining Deeping at the end of May, but no-one else managed more than 11.

Indeed there were still seven needed to win when Peacock strolled to the crease. He promptly smashed his second ball for six and started to walk off the pitch thinking the game was over. He was ordered back onto the field and duly scampered the necessary single.

It was an important win for Deeping as their season had started to fizzle out. They are currently fifth, one place behind neighbours Bourne who were hammered by 114 runs by leaders Woodhall Spa yesterday.

Only Tom Dixon (62) emerged with any credit in Bourne’s total of 134. Bourne contest a Regional Finals heat of the national Twenty/20 competition in Bradford today (August 2)

Spalding suffered another crushing defeat and look doomed to a return to South Lincs League cricket. They were thrashed at Grantham by 145 runs despite Josh Newton (52) and Warren Nel (49) taking them to 98-1 in reply to the home side’s 295-4.

Unfortunately the last nine wickets fell for just 52 runs to keep Spalding rooted at the bottom, 39 points from safety with just two matches to go.
