Dalton heroics earn Oakham United revenge over Bourne Town
Oakham United beat Bourne Town 3-1 on penalties in the United Counties League KO Cup after drawing 2-2 at full time and 3-3 at the end of extra time last night (Tuesday).
It was returning goalkeeper Simon Dalton who was hero for Oakham, saving three of the Wakes’ penalties and then stepping up to score winner.
The victory goes some way to avenging the Tractor Boys’ 5-0 shock defeat to Bourne two weeks earlier in the UCL Division One.
Dalton, who only just returned from a spell on the sidelines with injury, saved penalties from Glenn Spearink, James Zealand and Andy Moss before scoring Oakham’s fifth kick to earn progression.
Ben Easson and Zak Munton had scored the first penalties in the shoot-out for Oakham and Bourne respectively but five of the next kicks were saved. Bourne keeper Alex Brown, who played for Oakham last season, denied his old team mates Michael Nelson and Richard Nelson, who both played against doctor’s orders, either side of Gav Cooke’s successful conversion.
Nearly two hours before the shoot-out Bourne took the lead through Spearink. He was played in by a great defence splitting ball from Kieran Blanchard’s which allowed the striker to run clear and beat Dalton with a confident finish.
However the host’s lead at the Abbey Lawn lasted for just a minute when Seb Archer-Fern fed Ash Civil who fired the ball across the face of goal for Easson to drive past the keeper on a tight angle for 1-1.
Teenager Munton impressed for Bourne once again and he put Bourne ahead for a second time in the 21st minute, racing onto the ball and nestling his shot just inside the far post.
Just five minutes into the second half Adam Rotherty had United level, creating space in the box with a neat turn before firing the ball low past Brown.
Both sides had chances to win the match in regular time. First Spearink was denied by the foot of Oakham custodian Dalton and then Easson had a shot saved off the line by Bourne defender Max Avory.
In extra-time Bourne took the lead for a third time in the match, just five minutes in. Munton was on the spot to score his second of the night when Dalton spilled a fierce shot from Spearink.
But in the second period of extra time Oakham were given a chance to level from the penalty spot when Dan Smith was penalised for a handball. Easson made no mistake from 12 yards.
Dalton then set-up the penalty drama with a fine save in the closing moments to deny Tom Cardall with Bourne’s final chance of the night.
