League One side Peterborough United to bring strong squad to Zeeco Stadium
Stamford manager Graham Drury is hoping for a bumper crowd when his side open their pre-season campaign with a home clash against League One side Peterborough United tonight (Wednesday).
The new-look Stamford squad are expected to face a strong Posh side in their first match back on English soil after returning from a training camp in La Manga.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson has confirmed he will be sending his entire first team squad to the Zeeco Stadium (kick-off 7.30pm).
And Stamford counterpart Drury also plans to use the friendly to field two separate sides after an extensive close season recruitment campaign.
He is also hoping to better last season’s crowd of 937 which saw Posh run out 5-1 winners over the Daniels.
Drury said: “It’s a great game for the fans.
“We get a lot of Peterborough fans come to watch us when they are away so hopefully they will bring a good following again.
“Darren Ferguson has said he will be bringing his strongest squad while we’re likely to field two sides, one in each half.
“It’s always going to be a tough game, but it’s all about fitness and the chance for our fans to see a really good professional side play at the Zeeco Stadium.
“We know they will be fighting fit after being in Spain so it would be great to beat last year’s crowd and get more than 1,000.
“We will have a lot of new faces on show. We’ve signed 12 new players and there will be a couple of trialists playing on Wednesday as well as the players who have re-signed from last season."
Posh were in action on their pre-season tour on Saturday when they recorded a 2-0 victory over Scottish Premier League side St Mirren.
Strikers Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa - who Posh paid an undisclosed club record fee to sign from Bristol City - scored the goals.
Daniels boss Drury added: "We worked a bit on our shape on Monday night, but we've only had three or four hours together going into facing a side like Peterborough.
"I'm not expecting miracles. I want the work ethic to be there because we will be doing a lot of chasing when we're not in possession of the ball.
"That's when we have to show character because it will be great for our fitness levels.
"I watched a video of Peterborough playing in Spain and they look very strong.
"It's not about results though - it's a game for the fans.
"The first two matches are all about getting fitness into the players and that will be benefit us more than beating someone by three or four goals."
Admission is £5 for adults, £3 concessions and £1 for youths (12-17 years) with accompanied Under 12s being admitted free.
Gates at Borderville open from 6pm and fans are urged to arrive at the ground in plenty of time ahead of the 7.30pm kick-off.
Blackstones are also in action tonight (Wednesday) when they host United Counties League Premier Division side Holbeach United at the ALH Recruitment Stadium.
Stones shared the spoils in their opening pre-season friendly at the weekend after drawing 2-2 at Peterborough North End Sports. Jones De Sousa struck both goals.
