Deeping Rangers are beaten by Newark FC in the United Counties League Premier Division North
Deeping Rangers manager Daniel French feels his side need to add some stubbornness to their game after suffering their first home league defeat of the season on Saturday.
The Clarets were beaten 3-0 by Newark FC in the United Counties League Premier Division North match at the Haydon Whitham Stadium.
Newark debutant Kairo Edwards-John netted twice for the visitors who also converted a penalty through Danny Meadows.
Despite the three-goal reversal against a Newark side who were worthy winners, French had been impressed with his side's defensive display.
He said: "We got what we thoroughly deserved but it's really difficult to work out why. Obviously what they did was better than what we did.
"Ironically it's probably the best we have defended across all of the games this season. David Burton-Jones and Luke Hunnings were superb. We didn't get broken down but still lost the game 3-0.
"We do struggle to stay in games though if we're not playing well. If it's not going right, we need to make sure we don't concede or we're in a position to stay in the game.
"We keep finding ourselves two or three down if it hasn't gone right and other teams have that little bit more steel."
In a game of few clear-cut chances, Rangers fell behind midway through the first half when Edwards-John converted a cross.
Deeping then lost Jake Brown to injury and had to make a further change early in the second period when Ben Cowles was forced off.
The visitors broke from a Deeping corner to force the penalty for their second goal which was converted by Meadows.
Edwards-John put the contest beyond the Clarets' reach with home goalkeeper Dan Swan making a superb save afterwards to prevent a fourth goal.
Deeping now start a tough run of October matches on Wednesday night when they make the trip to face a rejuvenated Sleaford Town.
A home match with Quorn on Saturday is then followed by away trips to Heanor and Long Eaton before the FA Vase tie at Newark.
The Vase match has been moved back 24 hours to Friday, October 22, as Newark ground-share with Basford who have a home game on the Saturday.
French added: "We have got a really tough October because the Sleaford match is now a different game than it would have been two or three weeks ago.
"We've had five home games in a row though so it will be nice to go away and it will break that regime of being at home because sometimes going away you automatically batten down the hatches a bit and dig in.
"We are not like that at home because our pitch is lovely so we just try to outplay teams and it hasn't always worked.
"We haven't got a Plan B. We just keep trying to play so need to get some stubbornness into our game."
Brown will miss the Sleaford match due to injury and Cowles is doubtful but both Tom Smith and Jake Showler are expected to return to the squad.
Deeping: Swan, Flack, Bloodworth, Burton-Jones, Hunnings, Walton (Coulson), Cowles (De Sousa), Banister, Bird, Wilson, Brown (Williams). Subs not used: Carter, Steele.
