Deeping Rangers beaten in Hinchingbrooke Cup final
There was no fairy tale ending for out-going Deeping Rangers manager Tuncay Korkmaz last night (Monday), whose side lost 2-1 to Peterborough Northern Star at the Hinchingbrooke Cup final at Jubilee Park, in Huntingdon.
The defeat ended his second spell as Rangers manager after he decided to step down due to work commitments
Phil Stebbing’s double secured the silverware for Peterborough Northern Star as a consolation from Jordan Avis proved too little, too late.
Deeping went behind after just seven minutes when right-back Michael Mackrell delivered the ball for Stebbing to sweep home from around the six-yard box.
With plenty of encouragement from Korkmaz, Rangers dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances in response.
Levi Wright’s header was held by Dan George while at the other end Daniel Bircham denied Jordan MacLeod and Stebbing nodded over.
After the break Wright, David Burton-Jones and Avis missed the target as Deeping went in search of an equaliser.
The advantage was doubled when Edison Fernandes Da Silva Junior’s free-kick was met by Stebbing with a far-post header.
Korkmaz made a double substitution and pushed Joe Braithwaite up front but he wasted a golden chance to score.
On 90 minutes Avis slotted into the far corner of the net but Deeping couldn’t get another goal in stoppage-time.
