BURGHLEY Park opened their season with a friendly fixture at home to local rivals, Ufford Park.

Ufford Park won the toss and opted to bat on a pitch which would not have looked out of place in August. In a revised formula, which enabled every batsman a knock, Ross Keymer top scored with an unbeaten 67* along with notable contributions from Mike Sampson (50*) and Andrew Larkin (21).

Skipper Mat Simpson shared new ball duties with Michael Jones (8-1-2-20) and both provided a testing and teasing line to the Ufford openers.

Bowling duties were shared around with David Popple capturing two wickets from seven overs and debutant Matt Leeson snaring two wickets off five overs. Matt Roberts took one from four overs alongside steady bowling from debutees David Cannie and Nick Sudbury and the evergreen John Meadows, who in reply scored an 67* batting at number 10.

Meadows’ partners included David Popple (14), Nick Sudbury (33), Bahla Mhlanga, with an entertaining 20, and a brisk 17 from Chris Meadows. David Cannie, John Shepard and Michael Jones added their names to the list for the end of season event, with a duck each.

Ufford’s 230 proved 40 runs too many with Popple the last wicket to fall, bowled trying to sweep Sandeep Dahiya. Notable bowling came from Jonny Young (7-2-2-18), Ram Bopodra (6-4-8-2) and Sandeep Dahiya (4.2-2-17-2).

Burghley Park will hold weekly coaching sessions for U9s, 15s and 17s. All teams will be coached by ECB Level 2 coaches. For details call Chris Meadows on 07801 930767 or email
